This is how I once explained drawing to a friend, I just remembered! Most people draw “a lamp” when they want to draw a lamp. The results usually don’t look much like the lamp they’re seeing. If you want to draw a lamp that actually resembles a lamp though, you have to let go of drawing a lamp and instead draw exactly what you see: lights, darks, lines, maybe colors.

And of course this is applicable to everything :)
